The Gates Estate on Swift Creek was bought by Ordway Benjamin Gates in 1918. A farmer by trade, he became sheriff of Chesterfield County in 1924. As sheriff, he rarely carried a firearm and never shied from duty. He was born a simple man who, through education, hard work, and high principles, became a distinguished and respected gentleman. Sheriff Gates and his wife raised a family of three and lived on the farm until 1984.
Today, the Gates farm has been renamed Gates Bluff and is home to approximately 80 families who enjoy its rolling hills overlooking Swift Creek and is adjacent to Pocahontas State Park. The neighborhood features spacious home sites averaging 1.25 acres and quality homes built by some of Chesterfield's finest builders. Protective covenants and strict attention to details make Gates Bluff an ideal place to call home.
Gates Bluff is conveniently located one mile south of Chesterfield Courthouse on Beach Road and is just two miles from the Route 10 and 288 interchange giving an easy commute to downtown Richmond and the far west end. Excellent shopping, medical facilities, and other services are located in the immediate area.
Gates Bluff residents and their school age children have the opportunity to attend some of the finest schools in Virginia. Elementary students attend Gates Elementary, located near the Courthouse, middle school students attend Matoaca Middle, and high school students attend the newly constructed Matoaca High just off Woodpecker Road. Come by and see for yourself why so many have called Gates Bluff home since 1990.
What a great turn out for our Annual Meeting held on February 21, 2024.
